Tonight, my heart breaks. I have watched various news reports of the violence at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville. Many who know me know my prayer of late has been that “God would break my heart with the things that break His.” One can only suppose the stirring in my soul tonight is a result of this prayer I am shaken by the images I have seen, the audio I have heard, the videos being presented. I am appalled by the insolence of those who think one race, ethnicity, or gender is loved by God more than the others. Tonight, as I continue to prepare my mind and heart for worship tomorrow, I will bow my head and bend my knees in prayer as the prophets of old did when their society was falling apart or had been torn asunder. I will continue the process of asking for forgiveness for the sins of our nation, and where applicable, the sins of the church. When Nehemiah came to the realization of Jerusalem’s utter destruction, his heart broke and he fasted and prayed, and he wept before the Lord. A reading of his prayer is as follows: “As soon as I heard these words I sat down and wept and mourned for days, and I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven. And I said, "O LORD God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, let your ear be attentive and your eyes open, to hear the prayer of your servant that I now pray before you day and night for the people of Israel your servants, confessing the sins of the people of Israel, which we have sinned against you. Even I and my father's house have sinned. We have acted very corruptly against you and have not kept the commandments, the statutes, and the rules that you commanded your servant Moses. Remember the word that you commanded your servant Moses, saying, 'If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the peoples, but if you return to me and keep my commandments and do them, though your outcasts are in the uttermost parts of heaven, from there I will gather them and bring them to the place that I have chosen, to make my name dwell there.' They are your servants and your people, whom you have redeemed by your great power and by your strong hand. O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants who delight to fear your name, and give success to your servant today, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man." …” (Nehemiah 1:4-11a ESV) Nehemiah, to affect change, took responsibility for the sins of his society and asked for forgiveness, and then restoration of Jerusalem. After praying and fasting, the rest of the book named after him chronicles, not only his desire, but determination to put feet to his prayer and personally be involved in affecting the changes needed to bring about a restoration of Jerusalem. Tonight, I challenge members of the body of Christ everywhere to be bold enough to pray the prayer of Nehemiah for our society. I challenge the church to couple our prayers with seasons of fasting, and then look to Him for ways to put into action the changes necessary to show the love of Jesus Christ and drive out the hatred that is so much on display in our Commonwealth tonight.
